The Castle was used as a location in Zeffirelli's adaption of the Shakespeare classic Hamlet (1990) starring Oscar winner, Mel Gibson, during which it doubled as 16th century Elsinore castle in Denmark.

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress, mostly dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. This trail takes you from the car park to the castle itself, which is a spectacular sight on the sea cliffs. It's a short, easy route, involving a couple of steps as you near the castle. You'll then visit an excellent viewpoint of the castle ruins, passing a couple of falls on the way.
